DUBAI CONTRACTOR WINS DEIRA MALL CONSTRUCTION DEAL

Construction in the plan is expected to start by the third quarter of this year

Dubai developer Nakheel has appointed local United Engineering Construction (UNEC) as the main contractor for the AED6.1bn ($ 1.7 billion) of Deira Shopping Center in the Deira Islands development in Dubai.

In February this year, MEED reported that UNEC made the lowest bid of 4.2 billion AED.

According to the developer's statement, construction in the scheme is expected to start in the third quarter of this year and be completed for 2020.

It will have a four-level leasable area with three levels of shopping malls, more than 1,000 stores, cafes, restaurants and entertainment venues.

Deira Shopping Center will be the center of the development of AED5bn Deira Boulevard, consisting of Nakheel's 16 residential towers, approximately 2,900 apartments, and extensive retail, restaurant and recreation areas. Together, there will be approximately 4.5 million square meters of shop space on the mall and boulevard. Nakheel issued tender documents for construction in January.

Nakheel is also developing the Deira Islands Night Bazaar, which will be the largest night market in the world, with 5,300 stores and 100 dock cafes and restaurants when completed. The contractor is expected to be completed in UNEC and 2018. Nakheel says all units in the Night Bazaar are fully rented.

Launched in October 2013, Deira Islands is a 15.3 square kilometer development that will add 40 km to the Dubai coastline, including 21 km of coastline. For development projects, there are hundreds of tourism, entertainment and residential development, including hotels, resorts, serviced apartments, mixed-use buildings and beach houses.
